SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Ten people were displaced late Tuesday after fire destroyed one townhouse and damaged two others at a complex in Smithfield, police said.

Fire crews responded to the 100 block of Landmark Drive about 10:30 p.m.

No injuries were reported in the blaze, and officials said it appeared to be an accidental cooking fire. It caused about $250,000 in damage to the three units.

"It was a lot of smoke outside when I came out and saw everybody banging on doors to get everybody out of the apartment," neighbor Tashauna Lane said. "I was wondering what was going on. And as soon as I walking in the house to call 911, I just seen the flames coming out the door."

The two townhouses adjacent to the unit that initially caught on fire sustained smoke and water damage.

Red Cross officials were on scene late Tuesday to assist those people displaced by the blaze.
