A firefighter was treated for second-degree burns on his hands early Thursday after fire destroyed the front porch of a home on East Weaver Street in Durham, authorities said.

Emergency crews responded to 2405 E. Weaver St. at about 12:30 a.m. The front of the single-story home was engulfed when firefighters arrived, but the blaze was quickly contained to the porch, which was under construction.

Two residents were able to leave the home shortly after the fire started. They were unhurt.

The firefighter injured in the blaze was treated on scene by Durham County EMS and later transported to Duke University Medical Center.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
