Southern Pines, N.C. — No one was hurt in a fire that swept through a classroom at Pinecrest High School early Friday morning.
The fire happened just before 6:30 a.m. in a modular building known as the Freshman Academy. Southern Pines Deputy Fire Chief Mike Cameron said firefighters responded to an alarm at the school and found no signs of a fire at first. They searched the campus and discovered flames and smoke coming from the modular building behind the gym.
The fire was contained to one classroom, but others received heavy smoke damage, Cameron said.
There was no one on the campus at the time of the fire. Pinecrest High School Assistant Principal Hanson said the staff moved students to another space when they arrived.
The cause is under investigation.
