Fire damages Smithfield strip mall

Posted — UpdatedSMITHFIELD, N.C. — Fire damaged stores and offices in Smithfield Monday afternoon before firefighters were able to bring it under control.
The building, at 21 Noble St., was evacuated and no injuries were reported. Most of the damage was contained to the attic area and within the walls, authorities said.
Some traffic was delayed on nearby Brightleaf Boulevard as drivers and emergency vehicles tried to get to the scene near the Smithfield-Selma border.
