Crews said the flames were contained to one bedroom. No one was hurt, but firefighters did rescue a cat.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

I think the most important question in this story would be:

Why was the complex named "The Palms" in Raleigh,North Carolina?

  • Aquamarine May 29, 2007

Maybe not........since I've never set the bedroom on fire.

  • peace_of_mind May 29, 2007

@Aquamarine..Maybe your not doing it right.

idonlikeu.......I don't feel I made a fool of myself at all by saying the fire was probably caused by someone smoking in bed, afterall, that IS what causes MOST fires in a bedroom. I've never heard of sex that was THAT hot.

Idontlikeu: Strangely enough, I tend to agree. I don’t smoke, but I do ride a motorcycle. It’s not a ‘crotch rocket’ and I try to be respectful of other drivers, but there is no doubt it’s not the safest way to get from point A to point B.

But it’s fun and like most things that are fun, there is risk involved.

I am reminded of what someone from long ago said: “Man is born to die. Life is but a daily putting off of the inevitable.”

Truly, we should enjoy it as much as possible ….

@Aquamarine.. I have no problems with public places that do not allow smoking. That is their right. As for being defensive, I just find it amusing that your first post assumed it was caused by smoking in bed and then proceeded to tell people how smoking should be banned. It turns out you were wrong on your assumption so you made an even bigger fool of yourself by assuming.

idontlikeu.......Live you life any way you wish.....You have that right......but aren't you being a little bit on the defensive? Is that because the "majority" of people these days are against smoking.....and you feel your rights are being taken away against your will? With so many businesses, restaurants, and many other public places prohibiting smoking in or around their facilities, I'm sure more and more smokers are feeling the need to stay home, if they choose to smoke.

@SailbadTheSinner.. I figure I'm payin high enough health costs that there shouldn't be any issue with anyone elses. I know for a fact tha a non-smoker pays less than a smoker. I pay my insurance, they can pay theirs but they need not attempt to tell me what I can or can not do. As for aquamarines statement about the invitation to an earlier demise, we all got to go some how but I'm living my life my way.

About the fire itself, it would be interesting to know if the unit was protected with Arc-fault type circuit breakers. These devices have been mandated for the last several code cycles for circuits supplying the bedrooms of residences. They are intended to recognize an arcing condition and open the breaker at a much lower current than would normally be required for a trip response. The intent of the Code in requiring AF breakers was to reduce bedroom point-of-origin fires.

Does anyone know the age of the apartment complex?

Idontlikeyou: I doubt seriously that Aquamarine objects to your smoking at all, especially in your home. I would rather expect that the objection is to PAYING for you to smoke in the form of higher insurance rates ….
