Fire damages Durham guitar shop

Posted January 26, 2012

— Fire crews were investigating early Thursday to determine the cause of a fire that ripped through a Durham shop that sells vintage and custom-built guitars.

The Durham Fire Department responded to a call about a fire at Danser Guitar Works, at 1805 W. Markham Ave., around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday night.

The damage was limited primarily to the back of the building and the attic, but there was smoke and water damage to both floors of the building, officials said.

Investigators said someone lived on the second floor of the building above the guitar shop, but no one was home when the fire started.

No one was injured. No other information was released.

Just thought I should let WRAL and anyone interested know that not a single person lived above that guitar shop. It was a music studio run by my father to teach guitar/bass/drums. There were many instruments lost up on the second floor. I'd love to know who was "investigating" this incident, considering they didn't even know what occupied half of the building.

this is a bad deal. andy is such a good guy and an extremely talented guitar maker / luthier. luckily, all of the instruments were rescued thanks to the efforts of the arriving firefighters. the person wanted for questioning is a homeless sex offender... and now an arsonist.
