FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fire crews were battling a major apartment in Fayetteville on Friday afternoon.

The entire roof of at least one building in the Stewart's Creek Apartment Complex was gone, charred and crumbled. Multiple trucks were on the scene, and firefighters could be seen spraying water down into the open rooftop.

Images from the scene showed residents gathered outside, where the smoke was thick. Firefighters arrived to see flames were already shooting through the third-floor roof.

Dozens of residents were evacuated. There were no injuries.

The fire started just before 1 p.m. on the 6000 block of Willowbrook Drive.

"The flames intensified and just got worse," Sean McDuffie said. "You could see people running out of the house, crying."
