Fire causes evacuation of Home Depot store
Firefighters were trying to determine what caused bags of charcoal in storage to catch fire Wednesday evening at the Home Depot at 11915 Retail Drive in Wake Forest.
Posted — UpdatedWake Forest Fire Chief Freddy Lynn said the fire started at about 7 p.m. and quickly set off smoke alarms and sprinklers in the 150,000-square-foot building. No injuries were reported.
“The sprinkler heads did their job because they put the fire out,” Lynn said. “You can't even walk in there now without an air pack. It's quite a bit of smoke in there.”
Shopper John Gregorious said he witnessed everyone getting out of the store.
“I was about to go inside and buy a Christmas tree," Gregorious said. "I figured they had the best trees around but unfortunately something (the fire) happened inside."
Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the State Bureau of Investigation will be at the store Thursday morning, along with the county fire marshal, to investigate the cause of the fire.
Lynn said it could take awhile to clear out the smoke and clean up the water damage. It was not clear late Wednesday if the store would reopen Thursday.
