NORTH TOPSAIL BEACH, N.C. — A three-alarm fire destroyed two homes and damaged a third on Topsail Island early Saturday, according to firefighters.

The fire broke out sometime after midnight in a home under construction on Hampton Colony Circle, off Island Drive, in North Topsail Beach. Multiple fire departments responded, and firefighters labored to put out the blaze in gusty winds.

No one was home at the time, and there were no injuries, said North Topsail Beach Fire Chief Thomas Best.

Best estimated damages at $2 million. The home where the fire started and a neighboring home whose second floor was destroyed were expected to be total losses. A third house south of the others had minor damage.

The cause of the fire hasn't been determined, Best said. The North Topsail Fire Department has requested assistance from the State Bureau of Investigation and other fire investigators.
