RALEIGH, N.C. — A fire at 6115 Chapel Hill Road in Raleigh, near the State Fairgrounds, sent black smoke billowing into the sky Friday afternoon.

Thick, black smoke was visible for miles over west Raleigh just before 4 p.m. Raleigh police were directing traffic to avoid the area.

No one was injured, and the traffic delays were cleared by 5 p.m.

A Raleigh fire spokesman said the fire stemmed from an asphalt vat in a commercial building. Firefighters brought the fire under control within an hour of the first call.

The plant belongs to Contech Engineered Solutions.
