HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — An early morning fire at the Orange Correctional Center on Saturday prompted the relocation of 216 minimum-custody inmates to other prison facilities across the state.

According to a news release issued by the Department of Public Safety, the fire caused extensive damage to the kitchen building and left the facility with no means to feed the inmates.

Inmates will remain relocated until the kitchen can either be rebuilt or repaired, the release said. No one was injured in the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
