CARRBORO, N.C. — A Carrboro apartment complex has been condemned after a Monday night fire damaged more than 20 units inside and displaced several residents.

The fire broke out at The Villages at Chapel Hill apartment complex at 500 Smith Level Road at about 5 p.m.

Authorities said it took about 40 minutes to get the flames under control.

Authorities said eight units inside the building sustained fire damage and others suffered water and smoke damage. About 20 people were displaced as a result of the fire.

Authorities said the building did not have fire sprinklers and estimate the fire caused about $500,000 worth of damage.

Those who were displaced took shelter in a nearby city bus while the Red Cross worked with apartment management to determine where the most help was needed.

"The apartment complex is going to provide shelter for them. They're working on finding a place where they can sleep, but the Red Cross is going to make sure that they have food and a place to stay," said Maria Melendez with the Red Cross.

One dog was rescued from the fire and two cats were unaccounted for but no injuries were reported, authorities said.

Authorities determined the fire was accidental and was caused by an exhaust fan.
