Fiery crash in Cary closes part of Walnut St.

Posted June 5, 2013

— A stretch of Walnut Street in Cary was closed Wednesday afternoon after a woman slammed her truck into a power pole on Walnut Street, igniting a fire.

Witnesses said the woman was driving too fast and may have lost control. When she hit the pole, her truck and the transformer burst into flames.

The driver was not seriously injured, said Susan Moran, a spokeswoman for the Town of Cary. She said charges are pending.

Power crews were inspecting the scene, and Moran said traffic would be diverted until about 7:30 p.m. Walnut Street was closed between Kildaire Farm Road and Byrum Street. Adjacent blocks of Walker Street are also closed.

It was just across from Cary Elementary. Absolutely terrifying when it happened. I heard the collision/screams from my living room and lost power. When I saw the flames, I was sure the driver had died. I still don't have cable or Internet; crews are still working to repair. Lucky is right!

Driving into work this morning in the pouring rain, saw speeding, phone use, tailgaiting, you name it. Pretzel has it right...there's very little enforcement. I'd like to see the percentage increase in Triangle miles driven in the last 20 years compared to the increase in law enforcement. I guess with the sheer number of drivers on the road, it's just more likely one will encounter bad drivers on a regular basis.

I hope she was charged and held responsible for the cost of repairs.

I can't imagine it wasn't texting or playing with the phone, as well as speeding. Get a grip people, you're driving something that can kill people - she (and society at large) is LUCKY all she hit was a telephone pole. PAY ATTENTION

"I hope this wasn't anywhere near the culvert which recently caught on fire."

That was on Cary Parkway between Kildaire Farm Road and Lake Pine Drive.

The map is way off - this is at the corner of Walnut and Walker, all the way up into downtown.
