Fiber internet service coming to Holly Springs
More neighborhoods are hooking up to fiber internet connections with Google and AT&T building the infrastructure in the Triangle.
Posted — UpdatedTown of Holly Springs IT director Jeff Wilson says fiber is the future. The town built a $1.5 million fiber network in 2014 to improve internal communications.
“Fiber internet is currently faster than what DSL and cable can provide to homeowners,” Wilson said. “It's the next generation of the internet of things.”
Holly Springs residents will have a fast lane to the internet with Ting – a wireless service provider that is entering the fiber internet business.
Ting’s Vice President of Networks, Adam Eisner, said that Holly Springs is one of the first installations in the United States.
“It's a very technically literate community,” he said. “It seems like a lot of people in the town are on the cutting edge of technology.”
The first residents to receive the fiber internet service from Ting will be in the Holly Glen neighborhood off of Avent Ferry Road, and they could get the service as soon as fall 2016.
With competitors like Google, AT&T, Time Warner and Century Link laying infrastructure across various parts of the Triangle, Eisner said Ting will primarily focus on the Holly Springs area.
Ting says it eventually will serve many other Holly Springs neighborhoods.
Installation for Ting’s service will cost $200 to $400. Monthly service at home will start at $89, and business service will cost $139 per month.
Eisner said Ting will host a community meeting Thursday evening at 6 p.m. at the Holly Springs Cultural Center.
