Festivities at DBAP lead up to All-Star game

Posted July 10

— In the days before the highly anticipated Triple-A All-Star game at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, baseball fans will flock to Durham for fun events and festivities.

It all kicks off Saturday with the free All-Star Fan Fest and Block Party. Starting at 11 a.m., guests can get a free tour of the ballpark, including the team clubhouses, take batting practice on the field, and enjoy family fun like face painting, caricature artists and balloon animals.

Later in the day, Blackwell Street will be shut down for the Block Party, which starts at 6 p.m. Live music performances are just one aspect of the event. The Baseball Project, a collaboration that includes rockers from R.E.M. and The Dream Syndicate, are headlining the show at 8:45 p.m. You can bet there will be some great local food trucks, including Only Burger, Chirba Chirba and Porchetta, and craft beer in this street festival.

On Monday, head to the ballpark for the Triple-A Home Run Derby. Six of the game's best hitters, including International League all-time home run leader Mike Hessman and former Durham Bulls MVP Dan Johnson, will take aim at the DBAP's Snorting Bull. It's not just fun to watch – fans can win prizes too!

  • The first time the Bull is hit, everyone at the derby will win a free steak taco from Moe's.
  • Every other time the Bull is hit, one fan will win a $100 gift card to Angus Barn.
  • If the Bull is hit 15 times during the competition, one lucky fan could win $15,000!

Other attractions at the Home Run Derby include a softball home run show, The Olate Dogs performing canines in between rounds, and fireworks after the derby.

Both teams will have a practice session open to the public from 2-5 p.m. Tuesday. Fans can watch the workouts and get autographs:

  • 2:15-3:15 p.m.: IL batting practice
  • 2:45-3:15 p.m.: PCL autograph session
  • 3:30-4 p.m.: IL autograph session
  • 4-5 p.m.: PCL batting practice

Wednesday night is the event we've all been waiting for – the Triple-A All-Star Game! Top prospects representing every Major League team will compete in Minor League Baseball's most prestigious event. There will be a fireworks show after the game. Limited tickets are still available!
