A Fayetteville couple was hurt when shots were fired at their car early Monday.

The shooting happened just after midnight on Eastern Boulevard near an overpass for the Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway.

Fayetteville police said Xavier and Tiffany McGhee were driving when another vehicle pulled in front of them. The couple told detectives that someone in the other car opened fire.

After they were shot, Tiffany McGhee managed to get behind the wheel and drove to the Cumberland County Detention Center for help.

“Both of them were shot in the upper extremities,” police spokesman Antoine Kincade said. “One was in the shoulder; the other was in the arm.”

Their wounds were not life-threatening.

Kincade said detectives think the couple was targeted and the shooting was not random. The couple had recently separated but reunited, so the incident may have been domestic.

“There’s no evidence saying that this is a road rage incident or a sniper,” he said. “Our aggravated assault detectives (are) working to track down any leads that are going to identify the shooter or shooters in the case.”
