FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A 21-year-old woman reported to Fayetteville police that she was raped early Sunday in the area of East Mountain Drive and South Eastern Boulevard.

The woman provided only a vague description of the alleged assailant, but investigators said they have no reason to believe the case is linked to a series of rapes in the Fayetteville area between June and early January.

Six women in Fayetteville and one in Hope Mills reported being sexually assaulted since late June. In each case, the victim said a man broke into her home – usually an apartment – late at night while she was alone, according to police reports. In an eighth case, a burglar tried to sexually assault a Fayetteville woman before fleeing.

A law enforcement task force assembled to investigate the cases, as well as other sexual assaults in nearby jurisdictions, recently released a composite sketch of a man they believe is linked to the string of rapes.
