RAEFORD, N.C. — A Fayetteville woman was charged Tuesday with abusing her 8-month-old son, Hoke County authorities said.

Candice Patricia Hill, 21, of 4309 Bragg Blvd., Apt. 254, was charged with assault inflicting serious bodily injury and felony child abuse. She was being held in the Hoke County jail under a $300,000 bond.

Hill took the child to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center on Dec. 1 for a fever and labored breathing, authorities said, and physicians noted the boy had several broken bones in different stages of healing. The injuries were so severe, authorities said, that the child was airlifted to UNC Children's Hospital for treatment.

Hoke County authorities were called in to investigate the case because Hill has been living with her boyfriend in Raeford in recent months. The alleged abuse is still under investigation.

The child has been placed in foster care, authorities said.
