FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Cumberland County authorities said Monday that they have charged a Fayetteville teenager with assaulting his nephew and killing his younger sister's pet frog.

Zjondelle Allen Patrick, 16, of 2323 Indian Creek Drive, is charged with first-degree kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, assaulting a child under 12, cruelty to animals and extortion. He was being held Monday in the Cumberland County jail after his parents refused to take custody of him, authorities said.

Investigators said Patrick, a student at Pine Forest High School, held his 4-year-old nephew against his will on Saturday, cutting the child with a knife and burning him with a cigarette lighter.

Earlier last week, investigators said, Patrick told his 3-year-old sister he would kill her pet frog if she didn’t give him her doughnut. He then dropped the frog into a jar of boiling water and watched it die as the girl ran for help.
