FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A water main break on Country Club Drive reduced traffic from seven lanes to two lanes Friday afternoon, police said.

Fayetteville Public Works Commission crews were trying to repair the ruptured 16-inch line, which was near the intersection with Lake Crest Drive.

Traffic was backed up in both directions, and driving was hazardous because of water on the road, police said.

Police urged drivers to use Murchison Road and Rosehill Road to bypass the area.

PWC officials said the break spilled 2 million gallons of water and caused thousands of customers to lose service or experience low water pressure.

Crews restored service to all customers within 90 minutes, but they said repairs on the water main would likely continue through most of Saturday. Lanes on Country Club Drive would remain closed until repairs are completed, officials said.
