FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The Fayetteville road closed after a car crash and gas main rupture will remain closed into Friday, city police said.

Flames from the gas line shot 20 to 30 feet in the air immediately after the crash, and the gas fire was left to burn out after Floyd Croxton, 68, suffered a medical condition and lost control of his van Tuesday morning, slamming into the above-ground main in the 1100 block of Shaw Mill Road.

Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Morgan said the safest course of action was to allow the fire to burn itself out before the main could be repaired.

The residents of the nearby University Estates neighborhood did not have to evacuate their homes, but police asked that drivers avoid Shaw Mill Road between Livingston Drive and Rosehill Road and use Country Club Drive as an alternate route until Shaw Mill road can be safely reopened.

Croxton and passenger Julius Mitchell, 62, were taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where they were treated and released.
