Fayetteville's new transportation hub to open late spring

Randy Hume, the director of the Fayetteville Area System of Transit, expects it to be fully operational by early June at the latest.

The building will be mostly glass, so passengers can see buses come and go from a large waiting area.

The Greyhound Bus station on Person Street and the Mega Bus are moving to the new transportation hub as well.

“We’re going to have a lot of amenities we didn’t have before in terms of just comfort and information. We hope to have some food service in it so people can get stuff to eat,” Hume said.

Ludora Ball is nearly 90 years old and rides the bus every day.

“I think it's going to be nice, and going to be real comfortable. I like it because it isn't across the railroad tracks," she said. "I'll be so glad for that, so when I come from church, I just about go where I want to go."

The new hub cost 12.6 million dollars, most of it paid for by federal and state dollars.

Right now, the system provides service to about 1.8 million riders a year, around 58,000 a day.

The city hopes this new hub helps that number grow.

"It is to encourage people to use transit," Hume said. "I think right now, not too many people are comfortable with coming down to our current center. This is a place I think will really be a big attraction for our system."
