FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A longtime charitable organization that took care of the homeless in Fayetteville abruptly closed its doors this week.

The City Rescue Mission, on Adams Street, shut down on Monday. A sign on the building says it is closed until further notice.

WRAL News obtained resignation letters from the organization's former executive director and two former board members, all of whom resigned in August. On Friday, volunteers were removing items from the building.

Jeffery Carlton, the organization's board chairman, said he plans to put together another board and start a new organization to provide the same services that have been lost by the closing of the mission.

People who utilized the mission's services are shocked.

"This mission is going to be missed very much," said Gordon Hebert. "It's a part of our community here that helps feed people. I know we got the Salvation Army back, but we don't have the shelters for men like we really need."

The City Rescue Mission opened in 1974. According to its Facebook page, each year it has served more than 25,000 people.
