FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville police are warning residents of a tech support scam that is being reported in the area.

Scammers call the victims and pretend to be a Microsoft employee, saying there is a problem with Windows software installed on their computer. The caller tries to get the victim to activate the remote access on the computer, which allows direct access to all files and processes.

Once access is obtained, the scammer steals protected information.

Microsoft is also warning of the scam and has set up a Web page with tips on how to avoid it. The page also advises that scammers try to request credit card information to bill for service or trick victims into installing malicious software.
Report any suspected telephone scam to local authorities.
