Fayetteville police seeking man who targets elderly with phone scam

Fayetteville police were seeking the public's help Wednesday to find a man who has been targeting senior citizens via phone scam.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville police were seeking the public's help Wednesday to find a man who has been targeting senior citizens via phone scam. 

According to investigators, the unidentified man has been calling people, identifying himself as a deputy with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office and telling them that they have failed to appear for a grand jury summons. The man tells senior citizens they could face arrest unless they pay a penalty, and then provides specific instructions on when and where to deliver payment. 

The man has called people from 910-234-0935. 

Anyone who may have been contacted should call the Fayetteville Police Department's Fraud Unit at 910-433-1856. 

Anyone who has information about the identity of the man should call Fayetteville Crime Stoppers at 910-483-8477.
