Fayetteville police: Passenger critically injured in Monday night wreck

An 18-year-old man was critically injured late Monday when the car he was a passenger in wrecked near the intersection of Rim and Fork roads, Fayetteville police said.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — An 18-year-old man was critically injured late Monday when the car he was a passenger in wrecked near the intersection of Rim and Fork roads, Fayetteville police said. 

According to investigators, Michael Anthony Herman III lost control of his 2004 Toyotoa about 11:30 p.m. in the 1700 block of Rim Road. The car hit a sign and tree before coming to a stop. 

Charles Oatis Jr., Herman's passenger, was found unresponsive by emergency personnel and taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He was later airlifted to UNC Hospitals, where he was listed in critical condition early Tuesday.

Herman, 17, was not injured in the wreck and fled the scene. He was later arrested at his home. 

Herman was charged with driving while impaired, driving after drinking under 21, felony hit and run, felony injury by motor vehicle, reckless driving and driving without a license. He was in the Cumberland County jail Tuesday under a $21,000 secured bond.

No other information was released.
