FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Fayetteville woman was charged Tuesday in a fatal stabbing at a home on Ellis Street, police said.

Police said an argument between Thomas McNair and Monaca Sherece Holt escalated, and Holt stabbed McNair, 67. He was dead by the time police arrived at the home at about 7:30 a.m.

Holt, 47, was charged with second-degree murder and was being held without bond in the Cumberland County jail.

Investigators didn't disclose the nature of the argument, but a neighbor said McNair had been trying to help Holt.

"I definitely know he was trying to be nice to her and help her out, and it's unfortunate that, in the process of him being nice, this had to happen to him because he didn't deserve nothing like that," Selena Baptiste said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Fayetteville Police Department at 910-703-9503 or Crime Stoppers at 910-483-8477.
