Fayetteville officer shot while chasing break-in suspect

An officer was shot in the hand while chasing a suspect from the scene of a residential break-in late Friday, Fayetteville police said.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — An officer was shot in the hand while chasing a suspect from the scene of a residential break-in late Friday, Fayetteville police said.

Police responded to reports of a break-in in progress at 6148 Wynnwood Drive shortly after 11 p.m. Officers said they saw saw four people running from the scene and apprehended three.

A fourth person ran, and an officer gave chase on foot. Shots were fired during the chase, and a bullet struck the officer's hand, police said.

The officer, whose identity hasn't been released, was treated by medical personnel at the scene.

Police said it's unclear who shot the bullet that hit the officer. Ballistics tests are being done to determine that, police said.

Investigators are questioning two suspects who remain in custody. The names of the suspects haven't been released.

The investigation is ongoing.
