FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A man wanted in connection with a beating and sexual assault outside Fayetteville over the weekend surrendered to authorities Monday, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said.

Investigators believe that Michael Anthony Lee, 24, of 419 Vanstory St. in Fayetteville, broke into the woman's home around 6 a.m. Saturday, cut her hair and attacked her. She managed to escape two hours later and called authorities, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Tanna said.

Tanna said in an email Monday afternoon that Lee was still being processed at the Cumberland County Detention Center.

According to state Department of Correction records, he has 18 convictions dating to 2003, including three counts of simple assault, breaking and entering, trespassing and communicating threats.

He was released from jail in January and placed on probation in March for traffic offenses.
