FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Fayetteville man was charged Thursday with sex crimes against a child, authorities said.

Michael Simmons, 37, of 5401 N.C. Highway 87, was charged with two counts each of sexual activity by a substitute parent, taking indecent liberties with a child and first-degree statutory rape. He was being held Thursday in the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $300,000 bond.

Investigators said the charges stem from alleged incidents involving a 9-year-old girl between June 11 and Aug. 20. The girl told authorities she was assaulted on multiple occasions while her mother was at work and she was left in Simmons’ care.
