Man charged with killing resident of Fayetteville homeless shelter

​Fayetteville police responded to 303 Maloney Ave Saturday around 7:30 a.m. in reference to a body being discovered next to a building that is being used as a homeless shelter operated by New Life Mission.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville police responded to 303 Maloney Ave Saturday around 7:15 a.m. in reference to a body being discovered next to a building that is being used as a homeless shelter operated by New Life Mission.

Authorities said the victim—who is listed as a resident of the homeless shelter—was identified as Ricky Dale Penny, 63. Penny appeared to have suffered trauma to the head, officials said.

Police arrested Antonio Dean Cooper, 33, in connection with Penny’s death. Officials said Cooper is also listed as a resident of the shelter.

Cooper—a registered sex offender—was charged with first-degree murder. He was being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond.
