Fayetteville, N.C. — A man already in jail in Cumberland County in connection with a shooting death last month was charged Tuesday in a second homicide that occurred two days earlier.
Kelly Eugene Elliott, 31, was charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon in the Aug. 30 death of Derrick Maurice Morrisey outside the Chief’s 25 Plus club, at 612 W. Rowan St.
Police said Morrisey, 37, of Raeford, was walking a woman to her car in the crowded parking lot at closing time when he happened upon a robbery. The robbers and victims exchanged gunfire, and Morrisey was hit in the chest by a stray bullet and killed, police said.
Investigators didn't release any details about how they connected Elliott to the crime.
Elliott was arrested near Houston on Sept. 11 and charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon in the Sept. 1 death of Errol Williams.
Police said Williams, 27, had stopped at a Kangaroo station on Bragg Boulevard to ask for directions when he was forced into his car, kidnapped, robbed and shot a few blocks away.
Joseph DeShawn Haskins, 21, and Kourtney Terrell Reed, 20, also are charged in Williams' death.
