FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A 20-year-old man who allegedly assaulted a couple in a Fayetteville parking lot was charged Monday in what police are calling a case of road rage.

Willie James Dean was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, assault with a deadly weapon and simple assault. He was taken to the Cumberland County jail and will go before a judge Jan. 23, 2012.

Police say Dean, in a 1999 Dodge Caravan, was tailgating a vehicle driven by John Dees, 29, on Bragg Boulevard Monday morning. When Dees and his passenger, 24-year-old Sarah Dees, pulled into a parking lot on Sycamore Dairy Road to let Dean pass, Dean followed them, got out of his car and punched John Dees in the face.

John Dees used pepper spray against Dean, who then retreated toward his van, police said. Sarah Dees got out of the vehicle to try and get Dean's license plate information, but Dean then turned toward her.

When John Dees got out to protect his wife, Dean got into his van, put it in reverse and struck the couple, police said.

Sarah Dees only suffered minor injuries, but her husband was dragged a short distance by Dean's Caravan. He was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, but his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, police said.

Dean fled the scene, but was arrested a short time later.
