FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A 45-year-old man was arrested Sunday morning and charged with robbing an elderly couple in their home.

Sonny Stetson is accused of breaking into a home on Southern Avenue Thursday evening with a pair of hedge shears, placing the shears to the neck of 81-year-old Annie Williams and threatening to kill her 84-year-old husband, John, if he did not hand over money, police said. Stetson rifled through John Williams’ pockets and took money before locking the couple in a bathroom, police said.

Stetson, who was known to the Williams and recently rented a home near their residence, stole additional money before leaving the area, police said.

Stetson was apprehended without incident at a hotel on South Eastern Boulevard. He is charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, first degree burglary and two counts of second degree kidnapping. Stetson remained at the Cumberland County Detention Center Sunday on a $50,000 bond.
