FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A family business that became a fixture in the Fayetteville community was charred by a fire early Saturday morning.

Flames burst through the roof of the Haymont Grill and Steak House, at 1304 Morganton Road, at about 3:30 a.m. No one was in the building at the time of the fire, officials said.

“It’s hard, I don’t know what to say,” said owner Pete Skenteris. “You can’t walk away from it.”

Skenteris moved to Fayetteville from Greece when he was 12-years-old. He started working at the grill when he was 19-years-old and purchased the restaurant in 1973.

For 43 years, he has called Haymont Grill and Steak House his second home.

Skenteris said he’s received calls from people all over the world after the restaurant caught fire.

“It was like a museum in there, Skenteris said.

Officials have yet to determine the cause of the fire, but said there was a substantial loss of contents in the building.
