Georgia father, son killed in accident off Sunset Beach

A father and his son died Friday afternoon when their personal watercraft hit a fishing pier off Sunset Beach, a town spokeswoman said.

SUNSET BEACH, N.C. — A father and son from Georgia died Friday afternoon and the mother and daughter from the same family were injured off the coast of Sunset Beach where they were riding personal watercraft, a town spokeswoman said.

John Wernowsky, 51, of Acworth, Ga., was driving the watercraft with his son, Jake, 10, as a passenger, when he hit the pier at the Sunset Beach Wildlife Resource Commission Boat Ramp.

The mother and daughter were following on a separate craft and suffered minor injuries.

Officials on the scene said the incident happened at the Wildlife Resource Commission Boat Ramp. The pier will be closed until further notice.

The identities of the family or other information were not immediately available.
