Father, son charged in drag race that caused Spring Lake power outage

Spring Lake, N.C. — Police have charged a father and son with drag racing in connection with a Sunday incident that left much of Spring Lake in the dark for hours.
Police responded to a crash on North Bragg Boulevard near Odell Road at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday found that a 2004 Nissan 350Z had run off the road and hit at utility pole. The crash knocked out power to more than 3,000 Duke Energy customers for about eight hours, police said.
Investigators determined that the car crashed during a drag race, and they charged Aurelio Estevez Espino, 49, and his son, Hasani Estevez, 18, both of 310 Odell Road in Spring Lake, with prearranged speed competition and careless and reckless driving.
Espino also was charged with misdemeanor child abuse. Police said his 8-year-old daughter was in his2000 Honda S200 at the time.
During the power outage, police said, a man broke into a Bank of America branch and robbed it. William Earl McLaughlin, 50, of 1122 Martin St. in Sanford, was charged with breaking and entering, felony larceny and safecracking.
