Father's Day Fun: Activities to celebrate dad

Wake Forest's third annual charity car show is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, along South White Street in downtown Wake Forest. The event features classic and antique automobiles including, custom, muscle, sports, pony, classics, street rods and custom trucks. Proceeds will benefit local organizations, including the Wake Forest Boys & Girls Club, Purple Heart Foundation of North Carolina and Miracle League of the Triangle. The show is free for spectators.

The N.C. Symphony's Summerfest series at Booth Amphitheatre in Cary will feature the music of Harry Potter, along with How to Train Your Dragon, Ghostbusters and other movies. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m., Saturday. Tickets start at $33. Kids ages 12 and under are free on the lawn.

Crowder District Park in Apex will mark the day with Daddy Day from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday. Play some nature-related games and then cool off with some refreshments. It's designed for all ages. The cost is $5 per family. Pre-registration is required. Contact the park at 919-662-2850.

Mardi Gras Bowling in Chapel Hill will have a deal for dads and free ice cream from noon to 4 p.m., Sunday. Dads bowl for free when accompanied by kids.

The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University has Father's Day mini golf and corn hole from noon to 3 p.m., Sunday. It's part of Nasher's Summer Days Nasher Nights series, which offers art trivia, drop-in activities and more. It's free.

It's not specifically a Father's Day event, but includes family time and ice cream. JC Raulston will host a Summer Solstice Family Ice Cream Party from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Sunday. The cost is $20 per family. Spend the last hours of the longest day outside in the beautiful gardens, which are part of N.C. State University in Raleigh. The evening includes Howling Cow ice cream and toppings on the patio of the McSwain Education Center. The arboretum's event lawn will host oversized lawn games and crafts. You can watch sunset from the spot's rooftop garden. Admission includes one ticket for each family member to the ice cream and toppings bar, lawn games and outdoor activities, and two tickets for craft and planting activities. Advanced registration is encouraged for this one as space is limited. It's designed for all ages.

The Durham Bulls play Columbus at 5 p.m., Sunday, and the team has some special Father's Day activities planned. Get there at 4 p.m., Sunday, for a special pregame catch on the field. Be sure to bring your glove and ball. Also, kids run the bases after every Sunday home game. The Bulls also have games scheduled Friday and Saturday with fireworks after each game.

Vollmer Farm in Bunn will host a Blueberry Music Festival, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, at the farm. The festival includes live music, blueberry picking, ice cream, food trucks and more. The farm's popular Back 40 Playground, usually open during the fall, will be open for play. It includes a big jumping pillow, underground slide, two playgrounds, a cow barrel train and more. Gates open at 3:30 p.m. Two misting tents will be on hand to cool down. Tickets are $9 in advance and $12 at the door. Ages 3 and under are free.

Marbles Kids Museum in downtown Raleigh will offer Dad's Day activities from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. They include corn shuckin', an ooey gooey science lab, a builder jam and more. It's free with admission, which is $5 per person.

And, if dad likes food, he might love going to one of Durham's big food truck rodeos at Durham Central Park. It's noon to 4 p.m., Sunday, with more than 50 food trucks, a youth dance party and more. The Peak City Pig Fest in Apex will feature teams from around the country serving up some great barbecue. It's Friday and Saturday.
