EAGLE SPRINGS, N.C. — A man and his 2-year-old son died late Friday after two mobile homes caught fire in the Eagle Springs community, Moore County authorities said.

Fire crews responded to the 200 block of McLendon Creek Lane at about 11 p.m.

According to investigators, the fire started in one mobile home and spread to the other.

After the fire was extinguished, investigators found Patrick Person and his son, a 2-year-old also named Patrick, dead inside a bedroom of the second home that caught fire. Authorities believe the father and son were sleeping when the fire started.

Norman Bennett, the boy's grandfather, lives in the second home destroyed by Friday's blaze. He said Saturday that we is still trying to figure out what happened.

"I was hoping that somebody picked him up," he said.

A relative of Patrick's mother told WRAL News that the 2-year-old was staying with his father overnight.

"He was sweet. He loved life," Evelyn Spencer said. "He was a sweetheart baby."

No information about the cause of the fire has been released, but an investigation is ongoing.

A relative has established a fund to help the family pay for funeral expenses. A donation can be made at any State Employees' Credit Union to the Barrett Family account.
