RALEIGH, N.C. — The suspect in a fatal shooting last month outside a Raleigh auto parts store was released from the hospital and taken to jail Monday, police said.

Matthew Durwood Calton had been at WakeMed since Nov. 23, when he was injured during an exchange of gunfire with a police officer trying to take him into custody.

Calton, 53, is accused in the slaying of Jay Gould "Jody" Simmons, 53, who was fatally shot while in his pickup truck outside Carquest at 2635 E. Millbrook Road.

About six hours later, Calton was shot in the torso outside the Creedmoor Crossing Shopping Center on Creedmoor Road as officers tried to arrest him on a murder charge. An officer was also injured in the scuffle.

Investigators haven't said how Calton and Simmons knew each other or provided a motive for the shooting, but real estate records show that Simmons owned the property where Calton lives at 2604 King's Circle in Raleigh.

Sources said that Calton, 53, might have owed Simmons back rent and that's why the two were meeting at the auto parts store.
