Sanford, N.C. — Joann Jackson had one request Tuesday afternoon. "Please call the police if you see this teenage boy," she said.
Jackson's 17-year-old grandson, Tobias McLean, hasn't been seen since his mother and sister were found dead inside a burning Sanford apartment Monday night.
Sanford police were searching for Tobias' stepfather, Billy Jo McLean, of 916 Clark Circle, who is charged with first-degree murder in the death of his wife, Calandra McLean, and her 13-year-old daughter, Tashonna Cameron.
Jackson, the mother of Calandra McLean, believes Tobias may be with his stepfather. Police would not comment Tuesday on the boy's whereabouts, nor did they issue an Amber Alert.
Calandra McLean's sister, Sadie Goodloe, said the couple had been having marital troubles and that Billy Jo McLean did not have a good relationship with his two stepchildren.
"We are really concerned about this boy,"Jackson said.
Neighbors registered shock and disgust at the scene that saw mother and daughter dead Monday night.
"To us, it's just like, what happened? What did we miss," Kayla Alston said. "It's a hurtful time because nobody, none of us out here expected that."
Arsenio Caldwell described "a church-going family" and said he couldn't understand how a father could get so desperate.
"Even if y'all going through some problems, there is counseling. And even if you can't work through your problems, there's always divorce," he said.
Police said Billy Jo McLean was last seen driving a silver 2001 Ford Windstar van. Anyone with information on his whereabouts should call the Sanford Police Department at 919-777-1051.
