Family seeks answers in deadly hit-and-run
Raleigh police set up a checkpoint Saturday where a man was hit and killed two weeks ago.
Posted — UpdatedInvestigators said Dwight Emory Smith, 26, was laying on Pettigrew Street near New Bern Avenue around 9:45 p.m. Aug 3 when he was hit.
Smith died at WakeMed and the driver left the scene.
"I want to know and find the person that just ran over my son," said Smith's father.
Both police and Smith's family stepped up efforts Saturday to crack open the case by passing out more than 100 fliers around the area.
"There is no way that my son laid in the street. He was in an altercation. What may have happened was he fell out and that left him there," said Sharon Hartsfield, Smith's mother.
"He wasn't just anyone. He wasn't just a pedestrian. He was loved. His father worshiped the ground he walked on," said Twanna Godwin, Smith's aunt.
A small cross was left on the side of the street in memory of the late 26-year-old.
