Family safe after chase, standoff in Wilmington
A Brunswick County man who called 911 before dawn Thursday and threatened to kill his wife and children is facing multiple charges, Wilmington police said.

Police found Jairo Checo, 34, and his family inside a car near the intersection of 2nd and Chestnut streets in Wilmington, and he led them on a chase throughout the city and county for more than an hour. By about 6:30 a.m., the man pulled his vehicle to a stop outside the Wilmington police headquarters.
Police said he refused to comply with orders, and an officer fired multiple shots. However, no one was hit.
Checo was taken into custody and charged with three counts of first-degree kidnapping, two counts of misdemeanor child abuse, assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer, felony speeding to elude arrest and first-degree trespassing.
The woman and her children were unharmed.
Police said Checo was employed with the Wilmington Police Department from July 2, 2007, to Nov. 1, 2007, as a cadet in basic training. An internal affairs investigation is underway.
