Danville police said a man who escaped the Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute Monday was returned to the hospital Tuesday by a family member.

Police asked for assistance after Toby George Smith, 42, was reported missing from the facility Monday evening.

According to the Sampson County Sheriff's Office, a school resource officer discovered the body of a man inside a vehicle at Hobbton Middle School athletic field. Authorities believe the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
