The family says the dog wasn't out too long before it came running back home bleeding badly.

Copper weighs all of 35 pounds. He spent his fifth birthday covered in cuts and bruises.

His family is in a rage. Ed Melechson's son and a friend took the beagle out for a walk Friday night.

"Just moments later, they came running back to the house with the dog saying Copper had been bit," Melechson said.

During the walk, he says the boys ran into two girls and an "unfriendly" dog

"Within five seconds, he was biting our dog and shredding him up," Melechson said.

It all went down along a quiet street near Sheriff Circle and Devon Street in Papillion

"It was a shock, wondering if he is going to be ok," Melechson said. "The dog's made so much noise that the neighbors came out"

One neighbor, Kristin Persing, saw everything.

She said, "The vocal reaction of the beagle and the snarling from the bulldog, it was pretty obvious that they're not playing around. This is a bad thing going on."

Melechson says it could have been worse if his son's 12-year-old friend didn't force the dog away.

"He went after this dog and basically choked him off our dog," Melechson said. The attack was five seconds. Had it been five seconds longer, the dog would have been dead."

Now, instead of a birthday hat, Copper wears a cone on his head.

He even has tubes in his stomach to keep fluids draining

The family says it's not letting this go.

"We're going door to door distributing flyers talking to people trying to figure out who the owner is," Melechson said. "Now is the time to fess up to this, call 911, let them know this what happened and it was an accident. Let's deal with this and be responsible."

The Nebraska Humane Society is investigating this case.

The dog suspected of the attack is said to be a white English bull dog with dark spots on the head, face and back end.

If you see a dog that matches that description, 402-444-7800.

The humane society says if it finds the dog and the owner, there could be possible citations.
