Family From Delaware Crashes on I-95

Posted July 22, 2007

— Seven family members were transported to Southeastern Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries Sunday after their van crashed on Interstate 95 near mile marker 33.

Just before 1 p.m., a vehicle traveling northbound on I-95 swerved into the lane of the van, which was also traveling northbound, officials said. The van ran off the road to avoid a collision, overturned and flipped several times, according to highway patrol.

Officials said the seven people in the van are from Delaware and are all related. The driver is the mother of two of the passengers. The passengers range in age from 8 to 15 years old.

Not only do they have to patrol--they need to do something about it. I recently saw a driver tailgating a MARKED state trooper vehicle on I-40. Must have been no more than 5 ft off his bumper, going about 75. The trooper gets in the right lane and the car passes. That's it--the trooper didn't do anything about it.

SouthWestRaleigh - I had one of those drivers cut in behind me within inches of my back bumper. Thought for a minute he was going to pull a "Dale Earnhardt" bump and run on me. I do wish the Durham PD would spend more time patrolling NC 147. Maybe, just maybe they could get some of the crazies off the road.

Without blaming the driver of the van, some people don't drive defensively. I am amazed at the folks that will get in the left lane and ride your blind spot.

Sarcasm for all of you who may miss the point...

Oh, you mean when changing lanes I'm supposed to pay attention and not interfer with the other driver? I thought it was the other way around--I drive an expedition/explorer/tahoe, and when I want to come over I'm gonna do it--isn't it YOUR job to get out of MY way?

And I suppose the driver of the other vehicle never even looked back. Probably didn't even know it had happened. I go back and forth to the VA Hospital in Durham sometimes 3 or 4 times a month, and I notice that on 40 Hwy and 147 (the Durham Freeway), a lot of people do drive like bats out of you know where. To top that, maybe 7 (being generous)out of 10 are usually on a cell phone. New bumper sticker: Save a Life...Pull over to Make that Call.

No doubt. The lesson here should be watch out. There are idiots who will cut within inches (literally) of you bumper at 75+ mph. If you are driving, pay attention.

And I agree with the probably yapping on phone comment. We have so many driving distractions these days.

  • SouthWestRaleigh Jul 23, 2007

Hey 68, now I agree with you. I drive fast. But like you said, when both lanes are full AND going 75 what is this fools point? I agree he is an idiot. See, you and I are cool now.
