DURHAM, N.C. — A family escaped unharmed from a house fire on Gurley Street Thursday evening.

Firefighters said heavy flames were visible on the right side of a duplex when they arrived at 507 Gurley St. The fire gutted the one-story, wood-frame structure, officials said.

A family that lived in one side of the duplex was home when the fire broke out, but got out safely, officials said.

Firemen gave their jackets to several children, and the Red Cross came out to the scene to help the family.

Fire officials did not immediately know the cause of the blaze.
