Family displaced, dog saved after Southern Pines fire

Authorities said that the fire at 1950 East Indiana Avenue started in the kitchen just before 1:30 p.m. The residents of the home were able to escape with three of their dogs, but three more remained inside, authorities said.

A firefighter was able to locate a small dog that had been burned and sustained other injuries, and paramedics on scene began treating the animal. Emergency workers then transported the pet to Small Animal Emergency Services on U.S. Highway 1 for treatment.

Firefighters also attempted to save another dog that was found in the home but the animal was declared deceased after oxygen and CPR were administered. A third dog was also found inside the home and determined to be dead.

The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes and it took almost several hours to extinguish completely.

The American Red Cross was called to assist the family with temporary housing.
