SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A family was displaced and a small dog was rescued early Sunday after a house fire in Johnston County.

Around 3 a.m., officers with the Wilson's Mills Police Department reported a fire at 45 Powell Drive. According to investigators, the fire started in a bedroom, which was completely destroyed.

Authorities say a woman took off her oxygen mask and lit a cigarette, and that is when the fire started.
