Family: Clayton boy 'in shock' after drive-by shooting

Rayveon Jones was standing outside his grandmother's house eating ice cream with family and friends when a man drove up and fired about five shots, one of which grazed Rayveon's head.

"It was pandemonium. Everybody was running, hollering," said Lynnell Best, the boy's great-uncle.

The group panicked after seeing blood on Rayveon's head. His mother rushed him to a nearby emergency room, where doctors did a CAT scan and found that the bullet did not enter his head.

"He was actually calm. I think he was in shock. He wasn’t crying or anything. I don’t even think he knew what happened," Best said. "If he’d moved his head 2 inches the other way, it would have been dead center."

Police arrested Terrance Lockley, 22, of Goldsboro, and charged him with attempted first-degree murder in the shooting, which happened at about 5:10 p.m. at 508 West First St. He was in the Johnston County jail Friday under a $500,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on April 18.

Lockley "had a beef with one of my nephews and just started shooting," Best said.

"I want him to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. He doesn’t need to be loose or out on the street because it's been escalating for a while," Best said. "It's very disrespectful. I hope this is the end ... I hope there is no more retaliation. It doesn’t make sense."

Princeton Police Chief Tyrone Sutton said the shooting could have been a lot worse.

"When you have random gunfire like that in a drive-by, it can be very dangerous," Sutton said. "You had several people out in the front yard. It could have been a fatal shot."

Witnesses said there was a second man in the green Dodge Intrepid with tinted windows involved in the drive-by shooting, but police have not said whether he has been identified.
